Donnie Darko, Southland Tales

Ein Phänomen eigener Art ist Richard Kellys Debütfilm "Donnie Darko" (unsere Kritik und unsere DVD-Kritik). In den USA ging der Film ohne viel Werbung und mit wenigen Kopien zunächst unter - und eroberte sich erst nach der DVD-Veröffentlichung eine Kult-Anhängerschaft. Die sorgt nun dafür, dass der Film, in einem leicht veränderten Director's Cut noch einmal in die Kinos kommt. Bei uns ist er leider - außerhalb des Fantasy Film Fests jedenfalls - auch nicht auf der Leinwand zu sehen gewesen. Hier nun ein sehr ausführliches Interview mit dem Regie-Wunderkind Kelly, auch zu seinem neuen Film "Southland Tales" (Website), in dem unter anderem Kevin Smith, Tim Blake Nelson und Sarah Michelle Gellar mitspielen werden. Er beschreibt den Film wie folgt:

Well, it’s tough to describe the genre of the film. The best way I can describe it is it’s 30% comedy, 30% musical, 30% thriller, and 10% science fiction. And those percentage levels could fluctuate, to some degree, as we finish the final cut of the film. There are musical sequences in the film, but it is not purely a musical. It is just as much a thriller, it is just as much a comedy, and it’s arguably just as much a science fiction film. It’s definitely a genre hybrid but somehow the musical thing got kind of blown out of proportion, and people just printed that it’s a musical.
